Supported Software

Centos
A standard in Open Source Operating Systems worldwide, CentOS 2, 3, 4, and 5 conform fully with Red Hat Enterprise's redistribution policies and aim to be 100% binary compatible. The platform of CentOS was designed specifically for people in need of an enterprise class OS, but without the cost or support of a Red Hat Enterprise edition.
While the CentOS software is built from publicly available open source code, it is not affiliated with, produced by, or supported by a single vendor, which allows for greater liberty, reduced cost, and a community-driven support system.

Fedora
The Fedora Project is the result of a collaborative effort between Red Hat and the open source community to provide free and cutting-edge software on a global scale. Because Fedora strives to provide the latest in innovative software, it is a popular choice for tasks requiring newer software than what is sometimes available in an Enterprise Operating System.
The software developed in Fedora is produced under a free and open source license, which grants others in the software community the liberty to adopt and modify them as they wish.
FreeBSD
Here at Nethosting we have long been fans of the FreeBSD operating system. When we made the switch to FreeBSD, it opened a lot of new doors, while still allowing a level of familiarity that made the switch relatively seamless.
For modern servers, FreeBSD is mostly favored by those who are looking for a very stable and predictable operating system environment. FreeBSD is not as aggressively developed as Linux tends to be, so the releases seem consistently stable and complete. You may not find support for the latest cutting edge hardware in the base FreeBSD install, but what is there works well and you can depend on it to keep working well for a long time. FreeBSD tends to favor stability and reliable performance over squeezing every drop of speed from a system, so it is great for servers that need to "just work," and continue working as long as possible under a moderate to heavy load.
One of the most interesting differences about FreeBSD is what is called the Ports Tree or Ports Collection. FreeBSD expects packages and software to be compiled from source, so it can be a bit challenging to install new things you are not familiar with. Fortunately, the Ports Tree system catalogs over 10,000 different commonly used software packages like MySQL database server, Apache web server, PHP5 and more. It serves as a scripted interface to help the system administrator compile and install a huge variety of software systems and packages using a common, yet customizable, array of settings. The use of source-built software (versus pre-compile binary installations) can help improve stability and performance while preserving an amazing variety and mix of installed software. We have found FreeBSD to be particularly capable as a platform for MySQL database servers that need to be reliable and fast.
FreeBSD does sport some exciting new technologies you will not find in many other places as well, such as FreeBSD lightweight server-segmentation Jails, the revolutionary new file system ZFS, XEN Dom-U and VirtualBox host and guest support, GPT large disk boot support, and an extensible kernel security framework called the MAC Framework.
On top of all that, FreeBSD is considered to be one of the most secure operating systems in use on the Web today. Security metrics maintained by independent groups routinely list FreeBSD as having the least frequent incidents of vulnerability. One of the few operating systems considered to be more secure is FreeBSD's security-focused cousin OpenBSD.
Many specialized operating systems for commercial applications are actually based on FreeBSD such as, Apple's Mac OSX, Dell (EqualLogic) SAN arrays, IronPort anti-spam systems, Juniper Networks JUNOS, and NetApp filers that use the Data ONTAP system.
If you're looking for a great server operating system to fill your need for a stable and reliable system, give FreeBSD a try today on one of our Dedicated Servers.
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a Linux distribution based on Debian that was created with a specific focus on usability and ease of installation. Its affiliation with Debian ensures that most of Debian's software is compatible.
Ubuntu provides a simplified solution for users that want an uncomplicated Linux-based operating system that is capable of incorporating newer versions of programs and hardware faster and supporting them longer than most other distributions.
Because of the large, active community of Ubuntu users, it is simple to connect with people online who are also familiar with the software, granting you additional and fast support.
